FREE Documentary Screening: Making Waves

Friday, April 26, 2024 at 7pm, join us at San Diego City College for a FREE screening of the documentary “Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound” followed by a Q and A (via zoom) with Midge Costin, the film’s director producer and a veteran Hollywood sound editor. The film reveals the hidden power of sound in cinema, introduces us to the unsung heroes who create it, and features insights from legendary directors with whom they collaborate.

Making Waves features the insights and stories of iconic directors such as George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, David Lynch, Barbra Streisand, Ang Lee, Sofia Coppola and Ryan Coogler and their work with sound design pioneers such as Walter Murch, Ben Burtt and Gary Rydstrom, and the many women and men who followed in their footsteps. From Set to Soundtrack: The Art and Science of Sound

On Saturday, April 27, 2024, we are devoting a full day to our next educational workshop. We will talk about how great audio is a combination of solid location sound, foley, sound design, and music. This will be followed by a panel conversation about what film directors need to know to best communicate with their sound teams.

Our speakers include Joanna Fang (Foley Artist - Sony), Jules Rascon (Sound Designer - Sony), M.G Espar (San Diego City College - Film Composer) and a Location Audio engineer to be announced.

Join us at Studio West, San Diego’s premier recording studio, also home to audio education center, The Recording Arts Center (TRAC) for an amazing program with multiple sessions and demonstrations.

This event is being produced in conjunction with the San Diego Section of the Audio Engineering Society, and AES President Steve Barsotti will be the moderator.
